           The Department of Biochemistry in the newly formed college is striving for innovation & excellence in investigation, research & academic activities. The subject -Biochemistry enables the students to comprehend the relevance of basic science and to learn the basic biological and metabolic activities in human body. Taking into consideration these goals, the department has adequate infrastructure, which is well equipped & adequately staffed.
          The department in coordination with other preclinical departments have scheduled classes to help MBBS students to be academically competent with a good attitude, be communicative with appropriate skills learnt.

CENTRAL LABORATORY
The Central lab in Hospital which is comprised of Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Pathology, Microbiology Departments which caters to in-patients & out-patients attending our hospital on a 24/7, 365 day basis.

INFRASTRUCTURE:
The main laboratory is an AC -controlled environment, housing all the equipment’s with ready access for service and maintenance. The essential equipments are connected to an uninterrupted power supply and entire laboratory has an emergency generator supply. 
Central lab has common blood collection following order of draw, under one roof, using single prick method to enable efficient sample collection & to be patient friendly. We have installed HIMS(HOSPITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM) with an integrated LABORATORY INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LIMS) which enables us to be ECO friendly and useful in prompt delivery of results to treating physicians.
The Department of clinical biochemistry offers diagnostic support services to the physicians of our hospital. The laboratory is well equipped with state of the art analyzers which measures chemical parameters in blood, urine and other body fluids. The clinical chemistry laboratory specializes in doing Cardiac profile tests, Inflammatory tests, Anemia profile, Covid markers, Hormone analysis apart from doing routine clinical parameters.

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY


                The Department of Microbiology provides services for the diagnosis of infectious diseases of  bacterial, viral, parasitic, fungal or tubercular nature. Molecular Virology BSL II lab was established on 14th May 2020 which caters to the population in and around Thiruvallur district with a testing capacity of around 1200 to 1500 samples/day. Besides Diagnostic services, the Department also takes a keen interest in training programmes on Biomedical waste management, Hand hygiene, spill management and other Hospital infection control related activities.

DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY

The Department of pathology in Government Medical college and Hospital Thiruvallur Support every aspects of Health care from guiding clinicians on the right way to treat common diseases and also life threatening conditions. we examine blood , body fluids and tissues. By using advanced automation processes and effective quality control management ,the Department offers the highest level of support to other departments in the hospital .we have registered in HMIS (Health management information system)integrated with LIMS (laboratory Information management system) to ensure rapid delivery of results.

Hematology and Clinical pathology includes diagnostic aspects of blood related disorders and deals with examination and interpretation of blood ,urine and other body fluids.

Cytopathlogy was started in January 2021 .It deals with examination of individual cells extracted from tissues to determine the cause and nature of the disease. It is widely accepted and cost effective method that allows rapid interpretation. It includes

  • FNAC( Fine needle aspiration cytology)
  • Fluid cytology
  • Pap smear

Histopathology is very vital as it broadens and progresses treatment options. It involves sampled whole tissues under the microscope which helps to diagnose the disease and determine the treatment plan.

OVERVIEW:
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of Government Medical college and Hospital has been functioning since March 2021.

FACILITIES:
Our infrastructure encompasses:

  1. A research laboratory for toxicological and serological research.
  2. A practical lab hall for conducting practical classes and as well as practical examination. It has monocular and binocular microscopes, and with LCD projectors.
  3. Fully equipped state of art mortuary with cold storage unit for 24 bodies. A separate dissection area for autopsy and 3 viewing gallery for 90 students. The mortuary has separate area for viscera packing, storage, inquest room, counselling room for grieving family and cloak room/demo room for students.
  4. A facility for performing anthropometric study.
  5. Forensic museum housing wet specimens of medicolegal examination, various poisons, photographs and charts, weapons.
  6. Demo hall having a capacity of 80 students for practical demonstration class equipped with LCD projector screen with AV aid for video demonstration. 

 DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY 

Overview
The Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College Thiruvallur was established in the year 2021. This department is committed to excellence in research and teaching. The disciplines of pharmacology span basic mechanisms of drug discovery, action, metabolism, and distribution, along with studies of the therapeutic and adverse effects that chemicals/drugs have on biological systems .Specialized Teaching Program is being implemented to train the Phase 2 undergraduate Medical students based on Competency Based Medical Education . PHARMACOVIGILANCE COMMITTEE
 
Pharmacovigilance Committee has been established to detect  and assess adverse drug reactions .The Adverse Drug Reactions are duely reported to ADR Monitoring Centre and uploaded in Vigiflow software . Orientation programs are being conducted on regular basis to sensitize Health care Professionals on the importance of ADR Reporting.

 DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE

Specialty of Community Medicine – Mission statement:
The mission of Community Medicine teaching is to contribute to the development of a holistic medical professional, who will

Department of Community Medicine:
            The Department of Community Medicine has been functioning in the Government Thiruvallur Medical College from 2021, following the inception of the teaching hospital. With the objective of training MBBS students as community physicians in order

  1. To prepare them to function as community and first level physicians in accordance with the institutional goals.
  2. To make the students aware of environmental, social, financial, personal, occupational issues of the patients and to inculcate in the students the habit of considering the above aspects while rendering patient care.
  3. To teach them practiced techniques of prevention at Individual, National and International level for various health issues.
  4. To orient the students with Indian Health System, National Health Programmes and Policies and International Health Policies and Agencies.
  5. To teach research principles and methodologies so as to create scientific attitude.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:
COURSES HANDLED: M.B.B.S.- Year1, Year2, and Year 3-Part I

  • The students are being taught as per the syllabus guidelines of the National Medical Commission and our university the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University using Lectures, Practicals, Tutorials, Seminars, Demonstrations, Clinical Training, Integrated Teaching, Community visits, various field visits and Self-Directed Learning.
  • The students are trained especially in Disease control, Health care system, Research methodology, Biostatistics, Health care of special groups, Health care management including hospital management, Biomedical waste and Disaster management.
  • The students will be assessed on a structured format by formative and summative assessment by written, oral and practical examinations.
  • CMEs (Continued Medical Education) and workshops will be arranged on topics relevant to the students.
  • Students will also be encouraged to involve in community health care activities, national health programme activities, primary health care activities in rural and urban areas and research activities.

 
EPIDEMIOLOGY UNIT:
The epidemiology unit is led by a teaching faculty (Epidemiologist cum Assistant Professor) in the department. The functions of the unit are distributed under three main domains namely education and training, research and service. The main objectives of the unit are to provide

  • Students and faculties with the necessary knowledge and understanding of epidemiological principles and procedures, and their application to health
  • Support in developing research proposals related to health and medical education
  • Expert advice and consultation in research methodology including design, statistical analysis, etc.
  • Support and services in outbreak management, surveillance and reporting as required by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from time to time

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY

 

OVERVIEW
The Department of General Surgery, being one of the Prime Departments of the Government Medical College & Hospital, Thiruvallur, is catering to the Surgical needs of the people of thiruvallur. Before which even a minor surgical procedure requires a painstaking journey to Chennai for the natives. “Rural Health is Nation’s Wealth” – Thiruvallur is a multifaceted city with rural roots in a diaspora spread ranging from the richest farmlands to the numerous multinational companies – this city harbours one of the largest migrating population in the state. After the inception of our Department, which is bolstered by the guidance of the National Medical Commission and the Government of Tamilnadu, a wide variety of surgical cases are done here with finesse and expertise from our dedicated full time faculty. Patients from surrounding towns and even the nearby states attend our surgical OPD and get treated with utmost care. More than 200 major and minor Elective surgeries, more than 60 Emergency surgeries and more than 150 day care surgeries are done every month. A state of the art post-operative care unit which is fully functional with dedicated residents ensures patient care to the highest standards and serving with the motto – “Taking Surgical care to the next level”.!

  3. Needed are triaged and admitted as In-patients in the Surgical wards.

  5. Day care surgical cases are done at outpatient basis as required
  6. Dedicated Endoscopy suite functions with state of the art console caters to more than 50 cases per month.
  7. All major surgeries including Thyroidectomies, Carcinoma breast, Hernia and other major Abdominal surgeries are done under CMCHIS Insurance scheme.
  8. Emergency and Septic OT functions every day 24×7 .
  9. State of the Art Laparoscopy suite aids in minimal access treatment for Gall Stones, Appendicitis and hernia.
